Dual echo bSSFP for real-time positive contrast of passive nitinol guidewires in MRI-guided cardiovascular interventions

چکیده
Background MRI-guidance of cardiovascular catheterization procedures potentially offers an ionizing radiation-free alternative to X-Ray guidance. Imaging methods allowing visualization of commercially available passive guidewires would facilitate MRI-guided interventions. Previous work has demonstrated that positive contrast of paramagnetic materials, such as nitinol, can be generated with dephased echo sequences [1,2]. Here, we demonstrate a dual echo bSSFP sequence producing a wire image and an anatomical reference image in one TR, with variable flip angle for reduced SAR.

Dual echo positive contrast bSSFP for real-time visualization of passive devices duringmagnetic resonance guided cardiovascular catheterization
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) guided cardiovascular catheterizations can potentially reduce ionizing radiation exposure and enable new interventions. Commercially available paramagnetic X-Ray devices create a small signal void in CMR images, which is ambiguous and insufficient to guide catheterization procedures. This work aims to improve real-time CMR of off-the-shelf X-Ra...
متن کاملSpiral imaging with off-resonance reconstruction for MRI-guided cardiovascular catheterizations using commercial off-the-shelf nitinol guidewires
Background MRI-guidance of cardiovascular catheterization offers improved soft-tissue contrast and reduced ionizing radiation exposure. The application of MRI-guidance to complex catheterization procedures has been limited by the unavailability of guidewires that are safe and visible under MRI. Here, we use RF-efficient spiral imaging for MR-guided cardiovascular catheterization, with real-time...
متن کاملPositive contrast spiral imaging of a nitinol guidewire
Background The clinical translation of MRI-guided cardiovascular catheterization has been limited by the unavailability of devices that are both visible and safe under MRI. In particular, rigid metallic guidewires are essential for most catheterization procedures and are at risk of heating during MR imaging [1]. Here we present an MRI method that simultaneously improves the visualization of com...
متن کاملPositive contrast spiral imaging for visualization of commercial nitinol guidewires with reduced heating
BACKGROUND CMR-guidance has the potential to improve tissue visualization during cardiovascular catheterization procedures and to reduce ionizing radiation exposure, but a lack of commercially available CMR guidewires limits widespread adoption. Standard metallic guidewires are considered to be unsafe in CMR due to risks of RF-induced heating. Here, we propose the use of RF-efficient gradient e...
متن کاملSegmented nitinol guidewires with stiffness-matched connectors for cardiovascular magnetic resonance catheterization: preserved mechanical performance and freedom from heating
BACKGROUND Conventional guidewires are not suitable for use during cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) catheterization. They employ metallic shafts for mechanical performance, but which are conductors subject to radiofrequency (RF) induced heating. To date, non-metallic CMR guidewire designs have provided inadequate mechanical support, trackability, and torquability. We propose a metallic g...
